My house, my Bauhaus

"Bauhaus" was never a word with special meaning for me, until I went to study at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard in 1996. The school was considered to be the American reincarnation of the Bauhaus, because Walter Gropius himself taught therefrom 1938to 1952. It was at GSD that I encountered the Bauhaus legacy and began thinking about Gropius and Mies van der Rohe.

For me, the spirit of Bauhaus is the daring courage to envision a new era in history, in which art, craft, design and architecture could be radically different from how they were in the past. ls this spirit of Bauhaus still valid today? Could it be possible that we are confronting yet again anew period in history?

I see the spirit of Bauhaus in the new chair and table lam designing; I see Bauhaus in the new light l am envisioning; l see Bauhaus in the phone and car l use every day; I see Bauhaus in the railway stations and the airports I pass through; l see Bauhaus in the home I will build one day- l hope it will be my own.  

My Bauhaus will be my house.
My house will be my Bauhaus.


Mein Haus ist mein Bauhaus

Das Wort "Bauhaus" hatte nie eine besondere Bedeutung für mich, bis ich 1996 an die Harvard Graduate School of Design kam. Die Schule galt als seine amerikanische Reinkarnation da Walter Gropius von 1938 bis 1952 dort unterrichtete. Dort begann ich, mich erstmals mit Gropius und Mies van der Rohe zu beschäftigen.

Der Geist des Bauhaus manifestiert sich für mich in der unglaublichen Kühnheit, sich eine ganze Ära der Geschichte auszumalen, in der Kunst, Handwerk, Design und Architektur radikal anders Sein konnten als jemals zuvor. lst dieser Spirit heute noch lebendig? Könnte es denn möglich sein, dass wir erneut an der Schwelle zu einem neuen Abschnitt der Geschichte stehen?

lch sehe den Geist des Bauhaus in jedem neucn Tisch und Stuhl, den ich entwerfe. Ich sehe das Bauhaus in jeder neuen Leuchte, die ich mir vorstelle. Ich sehe das Bauhaus in meinem Telefon und meinem Auto, die ich täglich benutze. lch sehe das Bauhaus in das Bahnhöfen und Flughäfen, durch die ich komme. Ich sehe das Bauhaus in dem Zuhause, das ich eines Tages baue ich hoffe, es wird mein eigenes sein.

Mein Bauhaus wird mein Haus sein.

ZAO/standardarchitecture

Born in 1970, Zhang Ke founded ZAO/standardarchitecture (标准营造) in 2001. With a wide range of realized works, his studio has emerged as one of the most important protagonists among, the new generation of Chinese architects. The studio's works have been exhibited and published to international acclaim. Zhang Ke won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in2016, and a year later, was awarded the Alvar Aalto Medal. He has been teaching Option Studios at Harvard Graduate School of Design since 2016.


2001 gründete Zhang Ke (geb.1970) sein Büro ZAO/standardarchitecture (标准营造) in Beijing. Er avancierte damit zu einem der wichtigsten Protagonisten der neuen Generation chinesischer Architekten. 2016 erhielt er den Aga Khan Award for Architecture, 2017 die Alvar-Aalto-Medaille. Seit 2016 betreut Zhang Ke die Unterrichtsreihe OptionStudios an der Harvard Graduate School of Design.
